Fabian Videla’s story could be your story. While many books explain what entrepreneurs have done to reach their success, Breaking the Mold, teaches you how to build and run a successful construction business.
Born in Argentina, Videla moved to the USA as a penniless young man. Through dedication and hard work, he applied the lessons taught to him in his childhood and young adult years changing his position as a local handyman to being the CEO of a conglomerate with interests in construction, trading, and software companies on three continents.
This rags to riches story goes through Videla’s many business ventures. Beginning with his first childhood business selling garlic door-to-door, it ends with his latest software venture that is expected to be valued in nine figures within the next five years. With each new venture, Videla learned new lessons which he applied to build more success. Those key lessons have been compiled into this book.
Breaking the Mold is Videla’s way of giving back to those around him. In his own words, “It has always been my dream to meaningfully affect other people’s lives. My desire with this book is to teach the lessons I have learned from other people and my own experiences, allowing them to transcend their own plane of existence, living on and touching the lives of others for generations to come. I deeply believe this is the best way to honor the people in our lives who inspired us and made a difference: by passing those teachings on to others.”
Let this book be your guide as you navigate the world of entrepreneurship, particularly in the fields of construction and service-oriented businesses. It can be the starting point of an amazing journey and be the steppingstone to your next level of success.

Jack Rosenthal –
A well-crafted and engaging self-help book which leans a little more heavily into a memoir
format than many. The use of anecdotes to illustrate the points of each chapter, followed by lessons that are briefly presented at the end, is a somewhat atypical but effective technique. The conclusion is ambitious and thematic, which is unusual but works well as a coda for the text. The language is quite polished. In short, this is a distinctive and engaging mix of a self-help/autobiography book that offers a very decent primer for principles of self-employment and business success.

In Breaking the Mold: Remodeling your Way to Success; the chapters are pretty much entirely about the anecdotes. There’s some perspective and analysis, but it’s presented as part of the storytelling. While some of the chapters contain specific advice (“this was a mistake,” “never do this”) the real tips are presented at the end of the chapters. What’s really interesting is that these tips are very clear syntheses of the lessons in the chapter: the author isn’t just repeating or summarizing things he has already said; more than once the core principles of the chapter aren’t even apparent until that final lesson. And yet the lessons clearly and specifically draw upon the stories which have preceded them. There are some action items embedded in here, but the lessons are largely prescriptive. They are also self-contained to a great degree. It’s a structure that flows more naturally than most similar texts. The lessons provide a perspective which adds to, instead of repeats, what’s in the body of the chapter, and they’re presented in an accessible, engaging tone of voice. It’s quite well done.”

I bought the version in Spanish and English and while they have done a great job in translating it to Spanish, the book reads much better in English (many terms are specific to the USA and don’t translate that well into other languages). I also believe the humor is better in English too. Can’t wait to get my hands on the audiobook version!

An incredibly insightful book that will help not just newcomers in the construction industry, but seasoned professionals as well. Videla takes you through a rollercoaster of a ride while telling these stories of his life and how they impacted the way he runs his business. Not all lessons will apply to you, but by the end of the book you will have walked away learning something new that will no doubt positively impact your business. Overall a great book with moments of comic relief that are much appreciated.

Breaking the Mold is more than a book, it’s a door to success, an opportunity to transform lives. Videla knew like no one else how to put together his valuable knowledge of life, exposing in detail invaluable lessons on how to reach the “top” even when the odds seem to indicate the opposite, Videla’s Life accurately portrays that of many Latinos who, for fear of failure or lack of encouragement, abandon their dreams, Breaking the Mold revolutionizes this reality, and presents us with valuable Lessons of Success to be adopted by any individual in the quest for a financial and professional upgrade.

Fabian Videla is a master storyteller as he weaves together valuable business lessons with real-life stories and applications. While directed at construction and trade businesses, as a freelancer unconnected to the trades world, I have been able to successfully apply the lessons he taught. The book is highly engaging and definitely worth reading — especially in you’re an entrepreneur. Go read it!
